Another great unmeetup on July 10, 2012. This time, our theme was Networking: Collaboration, Partnerships, Referrals, and Career Growth.
Here's How It Worked
We have four 30 minutes timeslots for presentations. Any un-meetup attendee can give a lightening presentation (2min max, no slides) on a topic they would like to have covered - as long as it relates to the Networking theme.
The audience will then vote on the topics that interest them most. This will be fun and engaging, not a simple show-of-hands - even the voting process contains networking. The top 2 topics will then immediately begin in parallel as 30 minute sessions, followed by a short break, then topics 3 & 4. If you end up not liking the session you voted yourself into, vote again with your feet and move to the other session.
By the way, the person who suggested the topic must either present during their 30min session, or assist in facilitating it, or a blend of both. Full disclosure, one topic has been preselected – see below, however, you can still vote with your feet!

What Kind Of Skills And Behaviours Do You Think Are Required To Be Successful In Today's Environment?
What would the work environment in the post-industrial, knowledge worker based work environment look like? We are not exactly sure because we have not been there.
What we know is that BIG is not necessarily the best – smaller organizations are more agile and mega-mergers are no longer taking place. In fact, some large companies are breaking down into its components.
What we know is we are beginning to have:
- Multiple work relationships instead of one.
- Horizontal relationships instead of vertical ones.
What we know is we are seeing more partnerships, more room for entrepreneurial, small organizations with innovative products and services.
In order to survive in this environment, we have to de-learn the corporate culture. In the past, a couple of home runs could make you a star and carry you for a few months, and in some organizations carry you even for a couple of years. Today, we need a consistent player: singles hitter instead of a home run hitter at the bottom of the ninth. Continuous effort, not spurts of excellence followed by coasting, is the new mantra.
What kind of skills and behavior do you think are required to be successful in this new environment?

Jason founded the Silicon Halton Agile Community (www.getagile.ca) and recently won the Lean Startup Toronto weekend competition. Jason has spoken at numerous conferences across North America and will be delivering a half-day session at this year's Agile 2012 conference in Dallas, Texas.
